Tonight's two hour episode begins with Gretchen totally psyched to be at fashion week. Yeah, she should be, we say (although we feel a bit differently by the end of the show, but we'll get to that). So, Gretch, Mondo and Andy are all having a nice little breakfast when they find out they have some friends waiting for them back at Parson's....where we soon find out they will be combining the normal reunion show with the finale. OK, we guess.
1. The Reunion. So, we'd first like to take this opportunity to say that the reunion's never as exciting as we think it's going to be and this season's no different. Oh sure, we find out a few funny little tidbits like Casanova has learned English and Peach has a gay following, but otherwise, it's really just an excuse to get Gretchen riled up by calling her a bitch. Fortunately, all that really happens is that both Mike C and Mondo come to her defense, she cries a little bit, and then we get a montage of her time on PR. Oh. They also do a Mondo and Andy montage as well. After the little jaunt down memory lane, Heidi asks the designers who they think will win, but in a Project Runway first (we think), none of the designers will take the bait.
At this point, we're still thinking that somehow April is going to be allowed in instead of Andy. We're wrong, unfortunately and the remaining three leave to finish up their collections for Fashion Week.
2. Tim's Take. So, now that our final three are safely back in the workroom, they begin to make last minute touches on their designs. Tim informs them that they will only be permitted to show 10 looks, so they must omit one of them.
Tim then makes the rounds to see how each designer will incorporate the advice the judges gave them at the last round of judging. Mondo tells Tim he knows that Nina thought his looks were a bit costumey, but he also knows that the judges love his showmanship And so he decides to git rid of his all black evening look in favor of the polka dot dress, which Nina despised. Tim says "Good job! Do not compromise!"
Next up, Andy tells Tim that he knows the judges loved his 11th look and hated his swimsuit look, so Andy decides to get rid of the swinsuit. Of course, our Hawaiian had more than one swimsuit! And, in his defense, why wouldn't he? I mean we're pretty sure Hawaiians live half their lives in the water. Unfortunately, his second swimsuit looks like it's made of hair and Tim eloquently explains to Andy that the hairlike quality of his garment makes it look like his model has hair growing out of her crotch. We agree.
Finally, Gretchen tells Tim she didn't like her 11th look and neither did Nina. Tim encourages Gretchen to minimize the accessible and emphasize the aspirational. Gretch says she'll stay true to herself and do what she can.
3. Runway Day. The day of the runway, our designers are nervous, but are looking good. Mondo looks totally rat pack and we love him for it. Gretch looks totally Cheryl Tiegs. And we love her for it. The seventies vibe is very in right now. Oooh. We also love her black seventies-style dress, which is sheer at the bottom. Again, very now. In fact, if we had known any better, we could have called it at that moment. Mondo stuck in the past. Gretchen looking on trend. Although come to think of it, Mad Men is pretty hot right now, too...
Oh. Andy looked good, too. In black with his fantastic mohawk. But he looks like an art student. In other words, he's got no shot in hell.
As the designers are getting their shows prepared, Mondo encounters some model drama. One of his gals decides not to show up, so he has to use an alternate. Tim also wisely talks Andy out of showing some hideous green pants in the show...
Stay Tuned for Part 2...
My absolute favorite look of the night was the dress that Gretch was wearing. I can't wait to read part 2.
