Project Runway: Heidi, You're Out (Part 4)

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 09: Designer Mondo Guerra speaks on the runway at the Project Runway Spring 2011 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at The Theater at Lincoln Center on September 9, 2010 in New York City. And considering the most recent Prada collection, this could also be seen as on trend. What we really think, though, is that we love every single thing in his collection on some level. Even if we wouldn't actually wear it, we still like looking at it. Why? Because of the graphic prints, bright colors, sequins, handbags, day of the dead skulls. We see a lot of things we could take and wear with a pair of skinny jeans. And we still want that skull handbag. There is nothing subtle about Mondo's collection, but we are drawn to it. In other words, his style is more our style than Gretchen's is, and, therefore, we like it more than hers.

Let's go ahead and take a look at Mondo's final collection...

Michael Kors says Mondo will certainly never have a problem with being eye catching.. Nina compliments Mondo on creating a very cohesive collection with great colors, but Nina also thinks it was too overwhelming with the decorative pieces. Further, Nina tells Mondo she thinks his collection  looks too young, too teenager and that he should have edited. Jessica Simpson is obsessed with the full length polka dot dress and we all have a horrible flash forward of Jess squeezed into the dress like a spotted sausage. Yikes. Michael Kors says the polka dots are too much and that they worked much better with the silver skirt, so that some relief could be given from the print.

Amongst themselves, Heidi explains that she thinks Mondo gives a little wink with his clothes and we absolutely could not agree more and we love him for that. Unfortunately, Nina is sick and tired of Mondo's circus act and she is angry that Mondo didn't listen to her about the polka dot dress. Michael Kors says he thinks Mondo needs time to grow.

Nina wants Gretchen and Mondo both to be winners. And then the smackdown begins.

(Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for IMG)5. The Smackdown. After the judges quickly put Andy in third place, they have to choose between Gretch and Mondo. Nina admits that both Gretchen and Mondo are editorial. Jessica and Heidi say that they would both want to wear Mondo's clothes over Gretchen's. But, Nina and MK are fighting for good ol' Gretch. Nina again says "This is a fashion show, not a circus show!", giving Heidi a furious scowl. Nina goes on to say that Seth Aaron's clothes, only last year (see left), look just like Mondo's, whereas, Gretchen's clothes look like right now. And, we do have to admit that Nina has a point. On the other hand, we think Mondo's clothes are actually much more wearable than Seth Aaron's (of course, Seth Aaron still makes the most beautiful jackets we've seen on PR).

Heidi fights back. Listen Mr. Michael Kors and Ms. Nina Garcia, this is a design show, not a who-makes-the-trendiest-most-wearable-clothes show (Go Heidi!). Jessica Simpson enters the arena, explaining that she doesn't like Gretchen's clothes because they're all baggy, which isn't stylish. Michael Kors retorts "Hello! Read a magazine (sweetheart)." Jessica gives MK the look of death, which basically says I will never wear your creations on a runway ever again Mr. Kors (MK would probably be quite thankful for that).

MK and Nina will just not let the polka dot dress go. They are 100% pissed Mondo did not listen to them (and we're sure poor Tim never would have let Mondo put the dress in if he had known the two of them would have reacted so violently to it).Heidi and Jess again say they would both wear that dress.

The designers come back on the runway. Andy is quickly auf'ed. Thanks for playing. Go back home and raise catfish. And, we're down to Gretchen and Mondo.

And...Gretchen, shockingly, is the winner of Project Runway!

Heidi comes on stage to congratulate Gretchen: "It was a battle and you won." Heidi seems pretty pissed to admit defeat here.

Gretchen is, of course, thrilled, and leaves the audience with these inspiring words: "My stuff is all in storage, and I have no idea where I'm going, but now I at least have the ability to go!"

Congrats Gretchen! We understand why you won and you definitely have a great sense of style. And, Mondo, we're sure we'll see you again, because I must have that handbag and just about every other item from your collection.

Until next season, auf wiedersehen!

  1. I still can't believe this finale. My heart was absolutely racing. In the end, I really don't know who deserved to win. I think Mondo has a better chance of being a name designer, but Gretchen I think will be a better local designer. If she opens a place in Portland, I have no doubt that it would be a huge hit. Amazing finale and what an amazing write up. I'm going to miss them. Yours was one of only three Project Runway blogs that I religiously read.

  2. Wow. This was an amazing post. It took me forever to read and I mean that in a good way. I agree with Little Black Dress that I will miss these.

All I can say to last night is wow. I still think Mondo should have won, but I understand why Gretchen did. Watching the judges argue is definitely a Project Runway highlight for me.

  3. I can't get an exact read on who you wanted to read. I know that the consensus seems to be that Mondo should have won. I love Mondo, but Gretchen's collection was something women would buy and wear. MOndo's could be worn by a 20 year old in Mimi. This collection is going to be sold by piperlime and Gretchen's was definitely the more marketable.

  4. I know that this is not really the place to complain, but someday when I am a partner at my firm, I am going to force the male associates to show an interest in Project Runway the way that I currently have to show an interest in sports. In the boys club that I work, talking about sports is perfectly normal, but if me and the one other girl talk about project Runway, we are seen as silly girls. Rant over.

Great episode, but I still don't know who should have won. Thanks for all of your hard work Mrs. Fashionista. Definitely one of the best Project Runway reviews on the internet.

  5. Mrs. Fashonista, you mentioned in part one that you were hoping that April would come back. Do you think that she could have won?

  6. I am leaning toward thinking that Mondo should have won, but I can't help thinking that it is only because his collection was bolder and less subtle. Also the judges say that Gretchen's was the most wearable, but who could pull off most of those outfits besides 6 foot tall ballerinas or gretchen herself? And the diapers?

I hope that Mondo was not just being punished for the polka dot dress, even though it was totally fug.

  7. I completely believe that Mondo's greatest sin was that his collection was too like Seth Aaron's. Thanks for all of this Mrs. fashionista.

  8. Hi, I'm a long time lurker who finally got up the nerve to post just as your Project Runway reviews are coming to an end. I know that a lot of people are up in arms that Mondo lost, but to me Gretchens clothes had movement and they looked fabulous! Its what I would see a woman actually wearing. Mondo while I love him as a person, presented a circus plain and simple. The right choice was made

  9. Hated the outcome. Loved seeing the judges in action. At first I thought it was being staged for drama. Boy was I wrong. I understand Nina and Micheal's arguments, even though they have used those same arguments to auf other before. Maybe Gretchen deserved to win, but I think Mondo has the brighter future.

  10. You truly are a treasure to do all of this. Thanks Mrs. Fashionista. Thanks for always making my workday a little bit easier.--Sarah

  11. I think that Rachel Zoe was a secret judge last night. Gretchen's collection looked like something she would totally wear. I still don't understand how she won.

  12. Poor, poor Andy. They didn't even consider him for a second. I think in the end the right choice was made, but it seems like I am definitely in the minority.

  13. What a fabulous little blog.

I'm sorry, I have disliked everything that Gretchen put out, but I have to say that Mondo did what Mondo likes and did not put forth a Runway show that that demonstrated any growth.

It looks like Mondo regressed to do things he loved with no thought as to who his customer could be.

Gretchen was smart and took the Judges advice. Mondo ignored it.

I do think Mondo has the brighter future ahead of him and I do think Gretchen should have been auf'd long time ago. But I was somewhat impressed by her show and underwhelmed by his.

  14. Thanks everyone for the love! Now that PR is over, I will be looking for another show to replace it with (to blog about, that is). As soon as I figure it out, I'll let you know :).

Oh. And if it was unclear from my posts, I wanted Mondo to win, but the Gretchen win did not make me as angry as I would have thought. Plus, the judging session was the best I've ever seen on PR.
