Project Runway: Sloppy Pajama Party!

NEW YORK - JULY 28: Model and Project Runway Judge Heidi Klum attends the 'Project Runway' Season 8 premiere at the Empire Hotel on July 28, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images)1. Everthing's Changed.  At the beginning of tonight's episode, we find out that everything has changed. April and Gretchen are the only ladies left and Gretchen notes how quiet it is now without the constant chatter and giggling of the other silly girls. April does not seem to disagree with this assessment. The living arrangements, however, are not the only changes that will be made. Once the designers go before Heidi on the runway, Mrs. Seal informs the designers that they will be required to switch models. The designers agonize through their choices and none of us really care because who are these models anyway?

2. The Challenge/ Heidi's Take. Heidi next tells the designers that for this challenge she will be their client and the designers will be required to create a look for her new line of active wear at New Balance. We fear that what Heidi means is that the designers will be required to create sweatpants. After Heidi shows the looks from her line, our fears appear to be confirmed as she shows hoodies, yoga pants, and sports bras in grays and blacks. But, in case this prospect is not exciting enough to the designers (which we suspect it is not to many of them), Heidi informs them that the winning look will be sold on Amazon! Yippee!

LONDON - SEPTEMBER 21: Models work out at the adidas by Stella McCartney s/s 2011 fashion show in Fitzroy Square during London Fashion Week on September 21, 2010 in London, England. (Photo by Samir Hussein/Getty Images for adidas)Gretchen is perhaps most vocal about her distaste for this challenge,  commenting that all of the looks in Heidi's line are retail driven and very basic. We completely agree with you Gretchen, but don't tell Heidi or she might give us a dirty look and make us cry.

Heidi can't seem to keep her hands off of this challenge and decides to step in for Tim to do critiques once the designers get to work. Heidi first stops by Mondo's station, who has created a short gray sweatshirt with a chiffon? shirt underneath it. Heidi is unhappy with the look and lets Mondo know that. Mondo gets super pissy and says well-so-sorry-you-don't-like-it-miss-supermodel-fancy-pants and sticks his tongue out at her. Heidi continues with her critique, saying that it appears that the neckhole of the shirt looks too small to actually fit your noggin through. Mondo says, no-I-don't-think-so and why-don't-you-go-ahead-and-try-it-if-you-don't-believe-me.Heidi calls his bluff, takes the shirt and in a pretty fantastic recreation of the OJ bloody glove, "proves" to Mondo that her head, at least, won't fit through the neck. Mondo loses it and storms off to the other room.

Heidi seems ok with Andy's creation, which is basically a hoodie and pants. Heidi next drops by April's station and lets the youngest designer in the competition know that she thinks her designs are too busy to fit into her line. That's called design Heidi. Heidi also pays a visit to Miss Gretchen. Heidi hates the ruching on the butt idea that Gretchen suggests (we admit we have no idea what that means exactly, but it sounds pretty ugly) and she is not pleased that Gretchen is not using her fabric. Gretchen gets defensive and angry and throws the bolt of fabric she had planned to use across the room, telling Heidi the fabric is gone, then, ok? Fine? Fine.

After giving a few more generic tips, Heidi tells the designers they have another surprise. Not only must they complete the look they are currently working on, but they must all design two more looks for the runway to fit into her line. Mondo is still so pissed at Heidi he won't even look at her face while she's talking. None of the designers are happy.

3. In Comes the Help.

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: The cast of project runway attends the Piperlime celebration of Fashion's Night Out at Piperlime Pop - Up Store on September 10, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Mark Von Holden/Getty Images for Piperlime)Never fear designers! Heidi is going to give you some help. And, who will be helping you out? Well, the other designers who have already been cut from the show, of course! And the gang is all together again. This is a good thing, no?

Michael C doesn't think so. He is absolutely dreading it because everyone hates him. He says he'd rather be gone than have to work with any of them again. Michael C, of course, realizes that the show must go on, however, and participates in the challenge. He ends up choosing AJ (who we don't even remember ever having been on the show, sorry AJ). Mondo chooses Val. Gretchen chooses Casanova. Chris and Ivy team up. April and Peach have their mother and child reunion, although April is concerned because Peach worries too much about each and every stitch. And, finally, Andy and Michael Drummond pair up.

4. The Scandal

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 09: Designer Ivy Higa walks the runway at the Project Runway Spring 2011 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at The Theater at Lincoln Center on September 9, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for IMG)All is going relatively smoothly, until Ivy, out of nowhere (or perhaps because the producers paid her), asks Michael C how it feels to be near the end of competition after having cheated. Michael C is completely floored. "What do you mean by that Ivy?", Michael C asks. "Well, Michael C, I'll tell you just what I mean by that. Remember the Jackie Kennedy challenge. Well, I know that you taped that whole entire dress together because you don't know how to sew." Ivy hisses."That's ok Ivy. How does it feel to be eliminated for a crappy design?" Michael C spats. Take that Ivy. You are a seriously sore loser.

During Ivy and Mike C's catfight, Michael D laments that he didn't want to come back on the show to return to all of the drama. Casanova quickly quips " I looooooooooooove drama." Oh Casanova, we miss you terribly.

Ivy won't drop it though and says she thinks Michael C should be disqualified. Enter Tim Gunn. Gather round, Tim says, let's get to the bottom of this. Ivy quickly explains to Tim that there was topstick in the bathroom and everyone knows that Mike C used it to hold his dress together, but no one said anything at the time because they were all way too focused on their own garments. Tim simply says this is a non-case. End of story. Move forward, work, work, work.

We won't lie dear hearts, after weeks of a big scandal being alluded to in the previews, we are pretty disappointed at just how ridiculous this scandal was. First of all, everyone knows that the designers often use tape, staples, whatever is necessary to keep their garment together if they don't have time to sew it, so we're not even sure how Michael C "cheated." Second, from the very first moment it started to happen, it was obvious that Ivy is either the biggest bitch in the world and/or is the biggest attention whore in the world and that this scandal was actually no scandal at all.

5. The Runway.

Heidi presents tonight's judges, wearing a beautiful blue dress with minimal makeup. We think she looks quite fresh and pretty, really the best she's looked in awhile. The guest judge for the evening is sportswear designer, Norma Kamali, who ends up being an ok judge. Not the best, but certainly not the worst.

Gretchen:  All three of Gretchen's looks involve a lot of layers, which look like they could start as workout gear and transform into a nice look to go to dinner. We actually like her collection quite a bit. The judges think we're stupid though and Gretch is in the bottom three. In particular, Heidi dislikes her looks because they aren't relaxed enough and she doesn't like the "bathrobe" (which to us looked like a cozy, but stylish wrap). Nina thinks Gretchen has too much layering (she may have a point, but we appreciated the thought anyway). Nina and Michael both hate the biker shorts, which do appear as if they are both twisted and riding up her crotch. Afterwards, Gretchen is convinced that Heidi hates her and Heidi does mention Gretchen's ego during judging.

Andy: Andy's looks include a black and white graphic swirly print. In particular, the dress he shows is cute and a half. We are fans, but wish he had not used the swirly print in all of the looks.Andy ends up in the top three. Heidi likes the looks a lot and thinks the dress is supercute. MK thinks Andy's clothes are exciting and super wearable; he loves the chiffon paired with the jersey. Nina Garcia  thinks it's a bit  halloween all together. And truly, three different gals wearing these outfits would easily fit in with the Cobra Kai.  Nina, however, also loves how luxurious his looks are.

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: Project Runway's Andy South attends the Piperlime celebration of Fashion's Night Out at Piperlime Pop - Up Store on September 10, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Mark Von Holden/Getty Images for Piperlime)April: April had our fave looks. All three had her typical unfinished, deconstructed style, but were in eggplants and grays, which we haven't seen from her yet (she sure loves black as we all know). The judges are also fans and she is in the top 3. Michael Kors likes the assymetry on her first dress, but doesn't think any of the looks are active unless you're going to a party (this could have been said for many of the designers' looks).

Christopher: Christopher's looks are terrible. The fabric looks thin and cheap and the hoodie for one of his looks has a strange butterfly shape; it looks like it could have been on sale at Target. Christopher is in the bottom 3. Michael Kors says the clothes look really cheap and that his dress is sadness personified. Heidi says Chris' buttefly top doesn't go with her collection or with the other two looks. Nina Garcia says it looks like a pajama party.

Michael C: Michael C's collection is all pumpkin orange and brown, which are two colors not in Heidi's collection. Further, the looks have leather belts. In other words, none of it fits with Heidi's collection from a color perspective and none of it fits the purpose of Heidi's collection from an active wear perspective. The judges agree and he is in the bottom 3. Heidi says Mike has introduced a lot of new colors to the line and pieces don't look too athletic. MK says just because clothing is oversized doesn't mean it is easy and relaxed. NG hates the fact that Michael C has used accessories with active wear.

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: Project Runway's Christopher Collins attends the Piperlime celebration of Fashion's Night Out at Piperlime Pop - Up Store on September 10, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Mark Von Holden/Getty Images for Piperlime)Mondo: All three of Mondo's looks are pretty cute, but what we most love are the adorable little headbands he has made for his models to wear. In fact, we think it's one of the main reasons he ended up in the top 3. MK loves the headbands, too, and even though Mondo has been forced to use muted palettes b/c of Heidi's color scheme, the looks still  have some whimsy so it works. NG likes the satin on the athletic jacket.

Heidi then announces that Andy is the winner! And surprise! All three of his looks will be sold on Amazon.

Unfortunately, however, the sloppy pajama party collection Christopher created just doesn't quite cut it this week and Christopher is out.

  1. I agree, April was my favorite. I couldn't tel if you thought that Michael C. or Christopher should have been auf'd. Personally, I was leaning towards Michael C.

The Michael C. "scandal" was embarrassing. I don't know if you ever watched Lost, but the promos were the exact same way, they would have nothing to do with the show. And what happened to last weeks "I love everybody" Ivy?

And I miss the old Heidi, I really do.

  2. Considering how BORING Heidi's looks were, I'm not surprised they were having trouble with the challenge. And why are you judging designers on how well they can design Heidi's aesthetic? How does that judge their creativity?

  3. This challenge was terrible. The designers were not allowed to design. Anyone trying to do their own thing and stay true to themselves was insulted by Heidi. This is more like she's the designer and the workroom are the people just churning out the clothing.

  4. Wow, when Heidi decides that she hates someone, she is not kidding. This is like Gordana all over again.

  5. This was one of the worst episodes they've ever done. Throwing a bolt of sweatshirt fabric at someone and telling them to make "active" wear isn't fashion, it's clothes. And it's just plain lazy of Heidi to make these designers work for free so she can profit with her lame collection of grey boringness. The made-up drama was lame, and I'm glad Tim put Ivy in her place.

  6. That whole Ivy nastiness was really beyond just mean. In a time when bullying is in every headline, Ivy was defining the word. Trying to pull everyone else on to her "team" to make someone hurt. That is bullying. I don't mind drama in the reality shows that I choose but this was honestly too much. Michael C is not my favorite contestant by a long shot but no one deserves to be BULLIED like that. No one.

  7. I just can't get excited about such a pedestrian category as activewear. Yup, it's what I put on when I'm vegging out at home, or going to Starbucks on Saturday morning for my must have cup of coffee, and I'm never going to pay the prices listed for Heidi's vanity line at Amazon.com, thank you, that's why we have stores like Target.

  8. I thought Andy's was cute, but I would not spend $148 on it.I think that I liked Mondo's the best. The question at this point is who will be the final three. At first I thought for sure it would be Mondo, Gretch, and April. Now I am not too sure.

  10. Every week everyone is told to think, work, and design "outside the box." But this week you had to think inside the tiniest box imaginable. A box made of grey sweatshirt material.
