Red Carpet: Hail Britannia!

At this year's BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards, three of our fave fashionistas, Carey Mulligan, Marion Cotillard, and Olivia Wilde, showed up looking a little blue, a little lumpy and a little Angie, respectively.

1. First, Carey Mulligan. Sometimes, we feel she gets a little lost in the fashion (particularly of late). We appreciate her effort very much, her youthful and quirky style and the fact that she often tries to make a look her "own". We even nominated her for the Fierce Fashionista award. But here, the blue suede shoes don't quite work for us. They're all we can see and that's just not right as the dress is entirely cute in its own right. We love pocketed dresses and we find Ms. Mulligan looks utterly charming, girlish and shy when she's got her hands shoved in pockets. Plus, we like the textured bodice with the black from the back of the dress peeking out at the shoulders. Also, we wouldn't have thought  the mid-calf length would work on tiny little Carey, but she definitely tends to favor it and we think it works here and really highlights the fact...that she's wearing blue suede shoes. True, the shoes, on their own, are beautiful and they add some quirkiness to an elegant dress. Again, we appreciate it and we even kinda like it maybe, but think that there needed to be a pop of color at the top (some small sapphire or ruby earrings or maybe just a brighter lip?) to balance the strong color. Overall though, we say she's in.

2. Next up: Marion Cotillard. Oh, Ms. Marion. You are another one of our Fierce Fashionista nominees. But lately, dear, we don't know what to say. This dress is at least an interesting choice, or at least your styling is. Your space cadet up do matches the silver shiny dress nicely (and you even have twinkly stars on you shoes!). To be honest, our only real issue with this ensemble is that it is not terribly flattering dear. There is something a bit lumpy about the whole look. We're on the fence here as some angles look better than others, but we're gonna have to give you an out, because choosing a dress that looks good on you should always be your first concern.

3. And, finally, Olivia Wilde. Here Olivia is doing her best Angelina Jolie impression. However, we've gotta say we love it. We're a huge fan of a three quarter length sleeve, particularly when it's done in such a sexy, unexpected, non-Betty Draper, kind of way. This is beautifully understated, while being totally saucy. And we love the sparkle! Our only issue is that we wish she had a bit of color in her lips, not a lot, just a bit more than the cadaver gloss she has on now. She's in for sure.

  1. You are so right, she is so trying to look like Angelina. It's a very elegant look, but you are right about the lips. But maybe then it would be too obvious that she was trying to be Angelina.

I don't know about those blue shoes with that outfit. I keep going back and forth, but I think that I kind of love it, but I might change my mind.

I am going to have to disagree with you on Marion. I think that she is totally in. I think the dress looks fab, I love the hair and the shoes also.
