Catholic Chic: Heaven Sent or Fashion Sin?

After perusing dozens of fashion week photos, we noticed a surprising trend in which designers from around the world seem to be inspired more by the Vatican than by Coco Chanel. And, oddly enough, we are both intrigued and think these Catholic Chic looks could be cute, if done the right way...

1. Father Ralph Forgot His Pants. This look, apparently inspired by the saucy Father Ralph in the epic (and steamy) 80's mini-series the Thornbirds, is from David Delfin's 2011 Spring Collection shown recently at Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week. We almost think it works, too. Almost. Except for the fact that Twiggy here has forgotten to wear pants. However, if it became more clear that the black overlay was a jumper/ dress, we think it might be cute?

2. How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? It appears that David Delfin also found inspiration from repeat  viewings of the Sound of Music. But much as we love Julie Andrews, we're not sure a nun's habit can ever really be fashionable. We do think, however, that this could make a completely fabulous "sexy nun" Halloween costume. At the same time, there is something about this that we kinda like. Then again, maybe we just like color blocking.

3. Cathedral Cool. And, finally, this little number, seemingly inspired by the gorgeous stained glass artwork in many a cathedral, appeared in Trelise Cooper's collection recently shown at New Zealand Fashion Week. This is by far the most wearable look thus far. We very much like the "stained glass" print, but we feel like it's placed a little low on her body and makes her look a little hippy. Oh. We also kind of dig the tassles on the shoes.

We think this next stained glass look actually works a bit better than the previous one because the print is a little higher up on the body. Minus the nips, of course.
After all, modesty is a virtue.

And, so dear readers, though we have prayed to St. Anne, patron saint of seamstresses, we are still torn. Are these looks fashion do's or fashion don't's?

  1. I'm going to have to say fashion don't all the way. The last two especially looks like something that they would sell at Walmart. Great article none the less.

  2. I'm firmly on the side of loving it. I've always loved the high fashion 1960's look. And the last two work totally I think. Maybe not for an everyday person, but put them on Natalie Portman on the streets of NYC and you will totally not think Walmart.--Sarah

  3. Catholic Chic? I've never heard of it before, but I love it.

  4. Just for the record, we doubt this is an actual "trend" you're going to find in Vogue. It was just something we thought we noticed in some of the collections this year (particularly the priest collar).

  5. Rachel, I can totally see your point about Walmart...it does look a bit bedazzled. I wish I could find a picture online where we can see the beading (I assume it's beading) up close. If it's well done, it could work and I also think, like Sarah suggests, that someone like Natalie Portman might be able to pull this off and take it from third grade teacher to hip. Who knows though? It could very easily make it to the what not to wear section of Us Weekly.

  6. I really don't know about the outfits, but this post was really funny. That's hilarious that you looked at the last two outfits and thought stained glass. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
