Red Carpet Mullet Dresses: Business in the Front, Party in the Back
There are good mullets and then... there are very, very bad mullets.
Similarly, the mullet dress trend has had some good guys and some bad guys...
There's the good.
Carey Mulligan in Prada at 2010 Oscars. I loved this, even dug the little forks and knives all over it.
Valeria Solarino in Pucci at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. Some issues, but this is mostly good.
Natalie Portman at Costume Institute. .Loving this Egyptian vibe and color.
Jessica Alba in Valentino. Has a similar quality to Carey's Prada dress and love this one, too.
And then, there's the bad...
A miss for our reigning Fierce Fashionista, Diane Kruger at the Cinema Against AIDS event. Love the hair jewelry, but there are too many details around the neckline and the mullet tail is too insubstantial to balance the dress.
Katy Perry at Get Him to the Greek premiere wearing an unfortunate 1/2 mullet dress, which seems only to have made a commitment on one side.
Elizabeth Banks at Cannes Film Festival. No. The fit is terrible (looking way too big on her torso). The dress may have worked if the dress had been fitted better to her body, but we're saying no on this dress in its current state.
Now, we're not suggesting that Dog, the Bounty Hunter could get away with wearing one of the lovely mullet looks. And we're certainly not saying that Kristen Stewart is going to look good, in say, Katy Perry's dress. But what we are saying is that we don't want to completely discount the trend as it is dramatic and, as we have suggested before, they look very pretty in motion. We don't think running will necessarily save the three dresses on the bottom though.
